At Byrd Eye Clinic, we take great pride in being one of the Detroit area's finest eye care facilities. Our team of eye care experts provides exceptional vision care services and ample information about all procedures offered. This is a particularly important concern with regard to LASIK, a highly effective refractive surgery procedure.
As with other surgeries, recovery from LASIK begins in the pre-op phase. Let's provide prospective LASIK patients with some tips for recovery so they know how they can heal quickly and free from complications.
Follow Pre-Op Instructions Closely
Pre-operative instructions are in place in order to ensure that you are in ideal condition to recover quickly and free from complications. Do not take your pre-op instructions for granted since healing really begins before the surgery is even performed.
Rest Your Eyes for the First Day or So
After you have undergone LASIK surgery, it's important that you avoid any activities that can cause eyestrain or eye fatigue. This includes reading, watching television, using your computer/tablet/mobile device, and so forth. It's best to sleep or rest your eyes instead, which will eliminate discomfort.
Wear Your LASIK Goggles as Directed
Patients are given special goggles to wear after LASIK is performed. These goggles prevent accidental and incidental scratching or rubbing of the eyes, and they also help keep dust and other particulate matters away from the eyes. Wear your LASIK goggles as your surgeon tells you—you (and your healing eyes) will be glad you did.
Sunglasses and a Hat with a Brim Are Key
Acute sensitivity to bright lights, particularly sunlight, is common after undergoing any kind of eye surgery. When you go outside, it's a great idea to wear sunglasses and to have a hat with a brim as well. These will help reduce any sensitivity or discomfort you feel related to the sun.
Avoid Dry, Dusty, and Smoky Places
Issues with eye irritation, itchiness, and dryness are common side effects that patients face as they heal from LASIK. These can all be prevented in a number of cases if patients avoid places that can trigger these issues. In general, that means doing your best to avoid smoky, arid, or dusty places, as well as places with lots of pollen in the air.
Carry Liquid Tears with You at All Times
It's always good to be prepared for dry eye attacks as you heal. Since dry eye is a common side effect following LASIK, that means having liquid tears on you at all times. Some eye drops that provide lubrication can mean all the difference between discomfort and clear vision.
Attend All Follow-Up Visits as Scheduled
There are multiple follow-up visits that are scheduled following a LASIK surgery. It's important that patients attend all of these as scheduled. This will allow the LASIK surgeon to assess the healing progress and for patients to ask any questions that they may have about their recovery.
